Theme Time- Love

I've decided to steal a page from Bob Dylan's book, and do a Theme Time Radio Hour type post. I'll pick a theme, and create a mix tape to correspond with the theme. I will probably not be doing them much, but it will be good posting material for those days when there just isn't much to post about otherwise. I'm starting today with one of the most obvious and simple ones, "Love".

  1. Lover, You Should Have Come Over- Jeff Buckley
  2. Are You Still In Love With Me- Tift Merritt
  3. The One Who Loves You The Most- Brett Dennen
  4. Love At The Five And Dime- Nanci Griffith & Darius Rucker
  5. Dance Me To The End Of Love- Leonard Cohen
  6. Real Love (Acoustic)- John Lennon
  7. Can't Get Enough Of Your Love- Barry White
  8. What Would Love Do Now?- Matthew Jay
  9. Make You Feel My Love- Bob Dylan
  10. I Love You- The Zombies
  11. How Do You Keep Love Alive?- Ryan Adams
  12. Can't Help Falling In Love- Elvis Presley
  13. I Will Always Love You- Dolly Parton
  14. True Love Ways- Buddy Holly
  15. I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You- Aretha Franklin
  16. I Love You For Sentimental Reasons- Sam Cooke
  17. At Long Last Love- Frank Sinatra
  18. Hello, I Love You- The Doors

Buddy Holly- Apartment Demos

ON this day in 1959, 22 year old Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off from Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tourbus. All three were traveling to Fargo, North Dakota, for the next show on their Winter Dance Party Tour which Holly had set - covering 24 cities in three weeks, to make money after the break-up of his band, The Crickets, the year before.

There is a track in this compilation called "Ni***** Hatin' Me" that is clearly not Buddy Holly and I have no idea why it was on here to begin with. I have removed the track for two reasons: It's not Buddy Holly, and I have no desire to spread that kind of hateful song to anyone.

Buddy, Bopper & Ritchie

49 years ago today, the world lost 3 of the most talented musicians it would ever see. Buddy Holly, JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were killed when their airplane crashed in an Iowa cornfield in the early morning of February 3rd, 1959. Buddy Holly, aged 22 was well known for such hits as "Oh Boy", "Peggy Sue" and "Maybe Baby", was arguably the most infuental singer in the past 50 years, having an influence on artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, to name just a few. The Big Bopper is best known for his song "Chantilly Lace", was the oldest of the three, aged 28. He had a 4 year old son at the time of his death, Jay Richardson, who performs tribute concerts around the world in memory of his father. Ritchie Valens was the youngest of the three, aged only 17 at the time of his death, best known for his smash hit "La Bamba", Valens is often referred to as a pioneer of Spanish rock and roll. Eddie Cochran recorded a tribute song to them titled "Three Stars", depicting how heaven gained three new stars with the death of the three singers (he himself would die a little more than a year later at age 21). In 1971, the three would find a new audience when Don McLean came out with his tribute song "American Pie", a song explaining his reaction the day he heard about the plane crash that killed Buddy, Bopper and Ritchie. The impact of their lives and deaths is still felt to this death, and leave everyone to wonder what could have been if they had lived.

Buddy Holly

Buddy Holly is where music starts and ends. It just doesn't get any better than him. Countless musicians, such as The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles were influenced by him, and many more to come will be influenced by him. Even though he died when he was only 22, he did more for music than most musicians who live to be 80 do. It's only speculation as to what he could have become, but I think he could have become the most successful musician ever to live, if only he had lived a full life. Sadly, we'll never get a chance to see if that was true or not, but thankfully we have a lot of material to remember him by. Here are some pretty cool videos I found of Buddy (and his Crickets).

Buddy on The Ed Sullivan Show singing 'That'll Be The Day"
(Interesting detail to notice in this video: watch Buddy's left hand, he will try to turn the volume up on his guitar a few times throughout the song, but can't. This is because Ed Sullivan ordered the speaker volume be lowered, and never told Buddy before he went on.)
