42 years ago Jimi Hendrix released "Are You Experienced" in the UK, where it shot up to #2 on the charts right behind The Beatles Sgt. Peppers. It went on to become of the most praised albums of all time. VH1 named it the 5th best album of all time in 2001, while Rolling Stone ranked it #15 on it's all time list in 2003. Buddy Holly- Apartment Demos
ON this day in 1959, 22 year old Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off from Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tourbus. All three were traveling to Fargo, North Dakota, for the next show on their Winter Dance Party Tour which Holly had set - covering 24 cities in three weeks, to make money after the break-up of his band, The Crickets, the year before.

Elliott Smith-1969-2003
The first time I ever heard Elliott Smith was around the time Good Will Hunting came out and he was making the rounds on talk shows promoting the soundtrack. I saw him on Conan O'Brien, and didn't really think much of him to be honest. I figured he was just one of many artists I had seen on Conan or Leno and would never listen to again. Sadly, it took his death to make me revisit his music as I've always been fascinated by artists who have died (too) young. What I found in Elliott is nothing short of a religious experience. Every song is like listening to someone lay their heart on the line every time he sings, every word he wrote was straight from his heart, and there is no faking it with Elliott. For better or worse, he makes you feel something when you listen to his music. It was 5 years ago today Elliott took his own life and left millions of fans heartbroken and wondering what could have been. True, he left us with some of the best music of our generation, but I'll always wonder what more he could have done had he lived another 40 years, 20 years..heck, even 5 years. We missed out on a lot of great music, no doubt about it. Hopefully, wherever he is now, he is much happier and at peace. Here are some demos, outtakes, unreleased and live songs of Elliott, hopefully you will find them enjoyable.

Counting Crows- Flying Demos
At some point before signing to Geffen, Counting Crows recorded demo versions of a number of songs, known as the Flying Demos. Various songs from this tape would later resurface on the band's debut album August and Everything After; the songs contained on the tape featured different music and in some instances different lyrics.

Janis Joplin- Pearl
Janis Joplin's second masterpiece (after Cheap Thrills), Pearl was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent -- given room to breathe, Joplin's trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit "Me and Bobby McGee." The unfinished "Buried Alive in the Blues" features no Joplin vocals -- she was scheduled to record them on the day after she was found dead. Its incompleteness mirrors Joplin's career; Pearl's power leaves the listener to wonder what else Joplin could have accomplished, but few artists could ask for a better final statement.

Jeff Buckley- Garbage Can Tape
Sometime during fall of 1996, East Village resident Barry Paddock was walking down 2nd Ave. At 12th Street he spotted a pile of cassette tapes left on top of a garbage dumpster. Curious, he decided to sift through he tapes to see if there was anything worthwhile. Most of the tapes were pre-recorded stuff like the Beastie Boys, which he didn't particularly care for, but one tape he found was a blank tape with a hand written label that read "J. Buckley Stuff". Barry saved that tape from the trash and took it home. The tape is approx. 35 minutes long and consists of Jeff doing 7 solo acoustic covers. The best guess is that the tape was made circa 1992 or 1993.

Miles Davis- Kind Of Blue Sessions
Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it's an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of "So What." From that moment on, the record never really changes pace -- each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. It's the pinnacle of modal jazz -- tonality and solos build from the overall key, not chord changes, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. All of this doesn't quite explain why seasoned jazz fans return to this record even after they've memorized every nuance. They return because this is an exceptional band--Miles, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb--one of the greatest in history, playing at the peak of its power. As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled, and then the band improvised. The end results were wondrous and still crackle with vitality. Kind of Blue works on many different levels. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don't like Kind of Blue, you don't like jazz--but it's hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.

Dylan/Cash Sessions
During the Nashville Skyline sessions in February 1969, Dylan teamed up with Johnny Cash to record over a dozen songs. Only one of these made it onto Nashville Skyline ("Girl from the North Country"). Most of the rest are here, in perfect fidelity. If you were to judge this as a proper studio album, the notices wouldn't be too positive, due to the ragged and tentative performances. Judged as a loose, informal meeting of two giants, it's very pleasurable listening, though more for Cash's contributions than Dylan's. With full band backing (including Carl Perkins on electric guitar), the pair run through easygoing, rockabilly-tinged versions of Dylan songs, Cash songs, old Sun rockabilly chestnuts ("That's All Right Mama" and "Matchbox"), and a bit of country gospel. Cash, in fact, dominates the proceedings: he sings lead more often, and the mere two Dylan tunes ("Girl from the North Country" and "One Too Many Mornings") are outweighed by a larger heaping of Cash classics ("Big River," "I Walk the Line," "I Still Miss Someone," "Ring of Fire," "Guess Things Happen That Way"). The CD might even appeal more to Cash fans than Dylan ones, especially as Dylan's singing is not up to scratch: his timing is off, he often sings on one note, and he even needs to be occasionally cued by Johnny for the right words. The disc also includes three interesting Dylan performances from a TV broadcast on The Johnny Cash Show in May 1969, as well as five less essential quadrophonic mixes of Nashville Skyline tracks.
