Here are my top songs of 2007, some of them are fairly popular, but some of them are probably not well known by the majority of people. Hopefully some of you will find a new artist you can enjoy, which is the main goal of this blog. A few of the songs I hesitated to put on the mix because they were recorded well before 2007, but weren't released until then, but in the end they were just too good to leave off.

The Little Willies

Norah Jones's first significant project after 2004's Feels Like Home, the Little Willies' self-titled debut finds the superstar vocalist/pianist playing band member and running through a laid-back set of country songs with other New York City-based musicians, including singer-songwriter Richard Julian, guitarist Jim Campilongo, bassist Lee Alexander, and drummer Dan Rieser. (The latter two are Jones's frequent collaborators.)

The group is clearly having fun on this lighthearted outing, offering up a few originals (the tribute tune "Lou Reed") and plenty of twangy covers, including Townes Van Zandt's "No Place to Fall" and a breezy, bluesy rendition of "Night Life," one of Willie Nelson's signature songs. (Nelson apparently provided inspiration for the ensemble's tongue-in-cheek name.) While Jones has a strong presence on the record (handling country songs with the same assuredness and nuance of her more jazzy numbers), Julian is equally prominent, contributing vocals that recall the amiable delivery of Lyle Lovett. For fans of Jones, Julian, and the loose groove of musicians and songwriters indulging themselves a bit, The Little Willies is sure to deliver.

Norah Jones

Norah Jones combines sultry vocals and classic sounding piano, and brings back memories of Billie Holiday. Daughter of famed musician Ravi Shankar, Norah has had music in her blood since birth. Her debut album "Come Away With Me" went multi-platinum, selling 18 million copies worldwide and winning Jones eight Grammy awards in 2002. In 2004, Jones released her highly anticipated follow-up album, "Feels Like Home". Pairing once again with producer Arif Mardin, Jones pursued a similar approach to "Come Away with Me", mixing '70s singer/songwriter-style tracks with blues, country, and her own mellow take on piano jazz. In 2003, Jones played in a group called the Little Willies along with Lee Alexander (bass), Richard Julian (guitar/vocals), Dan Rieser (drums), and Jim Campilongo (guitar), playing covers of classic American music like Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. 2007 saw the return of Norah Jones solo career with the mkuch anticipated release of "Not Too Late".
