Chelsea Hotel

The Chelsea Hotel has long been known as a "flop house" for authors, actors and singers. Some of the most prestigious people ever have stayed there, from Dylan Thomas to Bob Dylan to The Andy Warhol Superstars. It even served as a refuge for some of the Titanic survivors for a while. The hotel is often referenced in pop culture, such as films, book and of course, music. Some of the most famous songs by Bob Dylan were written during his time at the Chelsea (Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands to name just one), and the list goes on and on. Here are just a few songs that reference the Chelsea Hotel in some form.

Leonard Cohen- Chelsea Hotel No. 2
Elvis Costello- (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea

A Long December- Counting Crows
Love At The Five & Dime- Nanci Griffith & Darius Rucker
People Ain't No Good-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Mod-L Society- Janie EP

When most people hear the name Mod-L Society, they won't recognize it. Mention the name Adam Duritz, and people automatically visualize the crazy haired lead singer of Counting Crows. Mod-L Society was Adam's first band, formed in 1986 and very short lived. They released only one EP, containing only 2 songs. Most sources I've seen say only 100 copies were ever produced, and I have seen some copies on Ebay go for a couple hundred dollars or more. The production on the two songs leaves a lot to be desired, but it's an interesting listen to the beginning of Adam Duritz's singing career.
