Songs of 2007

Here are my top songs of 2007, some of them are fairly popular, but some of them are probably not well known by the majority of people. Hopefully some of you will find a new artist you can enjoy, which is the main goal of this blog. A few of the songs I hesitated to put on the mix because they were recorded well before 2007, but weren't released until then, but in the end they were just too good to leave off.

  3. King Without A Queen- Minnie Driver
  4. Keep Holding On- Avril Lavigne
  5. Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart- Rufus Wainwright
  6. Hate That I Love You- Rihanna
  7. Promise- CocoRosie

Beck- Nick Drake Covers

I've been a Nick Drake fan for quite a while now, and over the years I've heard some really pitiful attempts to cover his songs. In all reality, I should know better than to expect anything close to Drake because he had such a unique approach and style to his music, but I've always kept an ear open for any covers that could do him justice. Well, Beck covered a few songs from Drake's last album Pink Moon that gave me chills up and down my spine the first time I heard them. Beck doesn't try to copy Drake's versions, but instead gives them a feel all his own while still keeping the mood of the songs. They are after all, somber songs, but yet somehow beautiful at the same time. Beck's tribute confirms the feelings that Drake's legacy will never be forgotten, no matter how short his career was.

Nick Drake- Interplay One

Interplay One is perhaps the rarest of all Nick Drake recordings. This is due to its limited circulation as an educational kit for schools, it not being a purely pop or music album, and the fact that it was basically unknown to Nick Drake fans prior to the publication of Humphries' biography in 1997. The two songs Full Fathom Five and With My Swag all on My Shoulder are important additions to the relative small collection of just 31 songs Drake is known to have recorded and issued during his lifetime. Though not Nick Drake songs as such, they feature his playing and are of sufficient quality to interest his many fans.

-Full Fathom Five
-With Swag All On My Shoulder
-I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again

Nick Drake

For decades, fans have made a pilgrimage to Nick Drake's hometown in tiny Tanworth-In-Arden, England. His parents would invite these visitors into their house, playing early reel-to-reel demos of the late folk singer's songs and covers and giving away cassette bootlegs for free. Now, these recordings will finally see the light of day on an album set for U.S. release on June 19. "Family Tree" was compiled by Drake estate manager/archivist Cally Callomon, a veteran music industry art director and reissue producer who has also worked closely with Scott Walker. The set includes Drake's own take on tracks like "Cocaine Blues," a number of Jackson C. Frank's songs, Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" and Bert Jansch's "Strolling Down the Highway." It also contains early versions of "Day Is Done" and "Way to Blue" (both from his 1969 studio album "Five Leaves Left"), as well as nearly a dozen unreleased Drake originals like "Blossom" and "Come Into the Garden." The lo-fi nature of the recordings is preserved, with audible bits of Drake speaking and conversing between tracks. Drake's mother Molly, a major influence in his music upbringing, contributed a pair of her own songs, "Do You Ever Remember?" and "Poor Mum." Drake also sings with his sister Gabrielle on the traditional tune "All My Trials." Meanwhile, a reissue of the 1986 Drake boxed set "Fruit Tree" will arrive later this year. It will include Drake's three original studio albums, a new book and the documentary "A Skin Too Few." Drake died of an overdose in 1974 at the age of 26.

Nick Drake

After two albums of tastefully orchestrated folk-pop, albeit some of the least demonstrative and most affecting around, Drake chose a radical change for what turned out to be his final album. Not even half-an-hour long, with 11 short songs and no more--he famously remarked at the time that he simply had no more to record--Pink Moon more than anything else is the record that made Drake the cult figure he remains. Specifically, Pink Moon is the bleakest of them all; that the likes of Belle and Sebastian are fans of Drake may be clear enough, but it's doubtful they could ever achieve the calm, focused anguish of this album, as harrowing as it is attractive. No side musicians or outside performers help this time around--it's simply Drake and Drake alone on vocals, acoustic guitar, and a bit of piano, recorded by regular producer Joe Boyd but otherwise untouched by anyone else. The lead-off title track was eventually used in a Volkswagen commercial nearly 30 years later, giving him another renewed burst of appreciation--one of life's many ironies, in that such an affecting song, Drake's softly keened singing and gentle strumming, could turn up in such a strange context. The remainder of the album follows the same general path, with Drake's elegant melancholia avoiding sounding pretentious in the least thanks to his continued embrace of simple, tender vocalizing. Meanwhile, the sheer majesty of his guitar playing--consider the opening notes of "Road" or "Parasite"--
makes for a breathless wonder to behold. If anyone needs confirmation as to why artists like Mark Eitzel, Elliot Smith, Lou Barlow, or Robert Smith hold Drake close to their hearts, it's all here, still as beautiful as the day it was released.
