Frank Sinatra

11 years ago today Frank Sinatra passed away. In my opinion, he was the greatest vocalist of all time, and his music is timeless. 70 years after his recording debut (w/ Harry James), his music continues to live on, used for weddings, commercials, or basically any occasion where a great tune and voice is needed. The following is a recording of his last show, it's a soundboard recording so the quality is amazing. I have also posted a compilation called "From The Vaults, Vol. 2", which includes unreleased studio recordings as well as some recordings from some various TV shows.

Leonard Cohen

On Sunday I had the great pleasure of seeing Leonard Cohen in concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. I'd heard some recordings of his concerts this tour and I was really impressed by them, but nothing compares to actually being there and seeing him on stage. He was amazing and nothing short of perfect Sunday. He got on stage around 8, and finished around 11:15, which for a 74 year old guy is quite impressive. If you get a chance to see him, take the opportunity, this is most likely his last tour, and a living historical figure that should not be missed. The following download is 2 sets he performed in 1968 at the BBC, the sound quality is great and the performance is one of his best in my opinion.

"Guitars Kissing"

This is one of my favorite shows of all time, by any artist. Most people know this show as the "Judas" show, but it is much more than that. To hear how Dylan can pull of both an acoustic set and an electric set in the same night and make them both sound beautiful is a priceless experience. By the end of the concert, half of the crowd had left, but those still remaining were in for a treat as Bob pulled off the best version (in my opinion) of "Like A Rolling Stone" to be recorded, reacting angrily to the shout of "Judas" by a fan who felt betrayed by Dylan going electric. I will soon be posting a BBC documentary about this show that provides amazing insight to this show.

Elliott Smith-1969-2003

The first time I ever heard Elliott Smith was around the time Good Will Hunting came out and he was making the rounds on talk shows promoting the soundtrack. I saw him on Conan O'Brien, and didn't really think much of him to be honest. I figured he was just one of many artists I had seen on Conan or Leno and would never listen to again. Sadly, it took his death to make me revisit his music as I've always been fascinated by artists who have died (too) young. What I found in Elliott is nothing short of a religious experience. Every song is like listening to someone lay their heart on the line every time he sings, every word he wrote was straight from his heart, and there is no faking it with Elliott. For better or worse, he makes you feel something when you listen to his music. It was 5 years ago today Elliott took his own life and left millions of fans heartbroken and wondering what could have been. True, he left us with some of the best music of our generation, but I'll always wonder what more he could have done had he lived another 40 years, 20 years..heck, even 5 years. We missed out on a lot of great music, no doubt about it. Hopefully, wherever he is now, he is much happier and at peace. Here are some demos, outtakes, unreleased and live songs of Elliott, hopefully you will find them enjoyable.

Dave Matthews Band-8-19-08 (In Memory Of LeRoi Moore)

"As we sat this afternoon contemplating the loss of our brother, we wondered how we
could possibly do a show today. Dave put it into perspective stating, "There's no place
I'd rather be than here with you guys right now." We cherish special memories of our lost
friend. Tonight, Dave told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where the cash register
was near the stage and LeRoi leaned on the register because "standing had become a chore".
Roi proceeded to play the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said,
"that was the day I fell in love with him. And I'm still in love with him." It's safe to say
we all were in love with him. "It's always easier to leave, than to be left."

Richard Pryor Live At The Redd Foxx Club

Even though I wasn't even born at the time of this performance, and I was only 7 when Richard finally stopped doing stand up, I can still appreciate the icon that he was. For my money, Richard Pryor was one of the funniest men to ever live, and probably will always be. His humor was so far ahead of it's time that most of it is relevant to this day, more that 30 years later. I first knew of Pryor through his buddy movies with Gene Wilder, before I even knew about his stand up. I was in for quite a shock when comparing the relative cleanliness of his movie to his stand up. A lot of his material is not for naive ears, but if you can handle it, it will leave you wanting more when it's over. The world lost Richard far too soon, and we will probably never see another comedian like him again.

Merle Haggard

Country singer Merle Haggard turns 71 today. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for Bob Dylan in 2005, and he was a blast to watch. I wasn't too familiar with his music before that, but I knew who he was. Since then I've gotten into his music quite a bit and find him to be one of the greats in country music, and vastly underrated. Here is the show I was at, it's obviously hard to convey the enjoyment of the show without actually being there, but I think it's still a lot of fun to listen to. Enjoy!
